Elon Musk leaves Washington
WASHINGTON — Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role in the Trump administration, ending the billionaire tech mogul’s brief but chaotic four-month tenure overseeing a polarizing initiative to drastically cut federal spending.
Musk, who had already reduced his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), confirmed his departure in a May 28 post on X. His exit coincides with the expiration of his status as a "special government employee," a designation that limited his service to 130 days per year.
*"With my time as a Special Government Employee concluding, I want to express my gratitude to President @realDonaldTrump for the chance to tackle wasteful spending,"* Musk wrote. *"The @DOGE mission will only grow stronger, becoming ingrained in the government’s culture over time."*
A White House official verified Musk’s departure, he said,"The transition process is underway."
During his time leading DOGE and serving as a senior White House adviser, Musk spearheaded a divisive campaign to aggressively eliminate what he labeled "waste and fraud" while shrinking the federal workforce. The department, staffed by over 100 government employees, will continue operating without Musk at the helm. However, questions remain about how effective the group will be without its high-profile leader.
